Resort Closing
Sunrise Resort has been Your Resort for 93 consecutive summers. The folks who run it are taking the opportunity to make sure that the 140+ acre property stays out of the hands of residential developers forever. They are doing this by transferring the land and most facilities to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. DEP will make an RV park and fishery, while continuing to maintain facilities such as the pool and athletic fields.
"Even though people won't be able to come use it as they have for years, at least they can still come and use the grounds and reminisce," says one long time employee.
Sunrise, formerly Frank Davis Resort and Ted Hilton's Hideaway, has been a place where people met their spouse and would return with their children, grand children and great grand children. They would watch them learn to swim or paddle a boat in exactly the same places that they remembered from their own childhood. It is the place of precious memories for tens of thousands through the years.
Some customers and some local people are upset that Sunrise is closing, however the opportunity to make it what it will become is the best thing that could happen to the land. Sunrise has been a large taxpayer and employer of young people who seek summer jobs. The operators are hopeful that the property's future will bring shoppers to town rather than a bedroom community.
The Resort will remain open for parties that have already booked through the end of September.
